Architects

A successful building project begins with the proper design. To that end, we are currently recruiting talented architects to work with our nationwide network of steel building designers and contractors. We will be able to provide project updates and alerts via email. In addition to project resources, Capital Steel offers architects a variety of resources on the latest building innovations.

Capital Steel has a large network of independent authorized contractors that have extensive experience working closely with architects across the United States and Canada. Your information will never be sold or distributed, please view our privacy policy.

Architectural Update: “Green” Solar Roof Systems

At Capital Steel Industries, we have a strong commitment to protecting the environment through the implementation of green building practices and materials. In keeping with that commitment, we are pleased to announce that an innovative new standing-seam solar roofing option is now available to Capital Steel architects and builders. This new system integrates solar panels directly into the roof’s structure, eliminating the need for heavy and unsightly solar-collection structures.

These remarkable standing-seam roof panels capture energy through thin, durable solar laminates. The lightweight laminates are easily attached to the panels in the field through a simple peel-and-stick process, and the bond created is capable of withstanding wind at speeds up to 160 mph. This complete roofing system harnesses the available solar power to generate anywhere from 5 to 250 kilowatts of renewable energy per hour, depending on weather conditions and the building’s size and design.

The solar roofing system has a 20-year warranty, and is expected to produce a return on investment within 10 years. The light and flexible laminates are an excellent alternative to polycrystalline photocells, which weigh more and are easily damaged. No additional structural supports are required with the use of solar laminates, and their seamless integration allows for greater flexibility with the building’s design.

The energy output of the system is directly related to the roof’s size and its pitch. Solar systems are available with different capacities to match the roof’s surface area. The systems are designated according to the estimated number of kilowatts they can generate each hour under ideal conditions. Currently, systems are available at the following wattages: 5, 7, 15, 30, 60, 125, and 250 kilowatts.

The 5-kilowatt system is recommended for roofs that measure 1,000 square feet or less. At peak performance, a 5-kilowatt system is capable of generating an average of 6,700 kilowatt hours per year. As a frame of reference, a 60-watt light bulb consumes 60 watts of power for each hour of operation. Therefore, 6,700 kilowatt hours represents enough energy to keep that light bulb burning continuously for 12 years.

The comprehensive package includes the standing-seam roof panels and solar laminates, a solar array combiner box, a DC disconnect switch, a 3-phase inverter, an isolation transformer, AC circuit breakers, and a utility interface. Wiring schematics and a list of electrical components are included, and an optional Data Acquisition System is available for those who wish to track the amount of energy produced.

Solar energy is increasing in popularity as residential and commercial architects and builders search for efficient and affordable ways to conserve resources. According to the Los Angeles Times, solar panels and solar roofing took two of the top five spots for coolest new green building products at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in 2008. With the current focus on environmental preservation, solar energy and solar products are predicted to remain in great demand.

As an architect or builder, it can be difficult to stay abreast of new developments, especially in an industry that is constantly evolving.
